Ulrike GerhardĀ“s area of research is Urban Geography. Questions of global and globalizing cities, recent urban transformations, planning issues as well as processes of commercialization, financialization and touristification have been examined with it. Current projects analyze the meaning of home and homing in cities, the role of trust for urban development, and the relation between knowledge and the city, for example in the ongoing sustainability discourse. These themes often go along with a deeply inscribed spatiality of social inequality in cities which needs to be addressed by global, comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives. For my research projects, I try to include theoretical, empirical as well as participatory methods, most favorably also by engaging and involving students and other partners into the projects.
