Prof. Dr. Tarini Bedi
Dr. Prof. Tarini Bedi is Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a 2021-2023 Expanding Internationality Visiting Professor at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. She is also a fellow of Tasveerghar, the digital archive of South Asian popular visual culture. Professor Bedi conducts research in South and Southeast Asia, Europe and the United States. Her research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of urban, political, and economic anthropology, environment and ecology, anthropology of infrastructure and mobilities, cultural geography and place-making, science and technology studies, and gender studies. She is the author of two published books and several articles on urbanism in the global south. Her first book The Dashing Ladies of Shiv Sena: Political Matronage in Urbanizing India” was published in 2016 by SUNY Press and her second book Mumbai Taximen: Autobiographies and Automobilities in India was published in 2022, by the University of Washington Press. Mumbai Taximen was awarded a 2022 Victor Turner Prize in Ethnographic Writing from the Society of Humanistic Anthropology.
