Reflection on Kishangarh
Delhi has witnessed a lot of significant events throughout its history and contemporaries, it helped the city to grow as a city with varieties of neighborhoods that are able to accommodate a wide spectrum of individuals in accordance with their interests, cultures, and affordability.
Kishangarh is one of the multiples that grew with an identity of the village within the urban condition. Termed an Urban Village, it evolved with its own intricacies and morphology. That made room for people who wanted an alternate and affordable way to sustain themselves in the city. It accepts the metropolitan lifestyle of people while preserving village customs in a modified fashion. In five days of exploring the urban village, we identified unique typologies of buildings that evolved from the exemption of bylaws and complex landholdings. How people migrated from different parts of the country try to find belonging through space, culture, religion, and people. The place is very much dominated by rental living, which changed its demography. Earlier it used to be a village with more conservative and male-dominated, but with time as it absorbed migrants it became a safer and more liberal place for women and youth. The settlement now functions as a dense fabric with real estate interest as well as basic service infrastructural limitations, where people are trying to figure out unique ways of living and dependency.
